Discovering that Parkinson’s Disease is three times higher within the Amish community gave researchers the opportunity to look into what causes this disease, and hopefully discover a cure. PD manifests itself with tremors, and is caused by degeneration of neurons. PD is believed to be passed on genetically, but environmental factors may play a role. The Amish are of great help in the study due to their genetic bottleneck, and lack of outside genetics being introduced into their genetic pool.
